Kimi Code's CLI locks down symlinks, then walks back a default change a day later

Moonshot AI shipped version 2.1.0 of the Kimi Code CLI that powers Kimi Code Desktop on September 23, 2026. It added an experimental fullscreen terminal mode, blocked file tools from following symlinks out of the working directory, sped up startup, and fixed a crash opening large sessions, but it also turned off filesystem watchers by default as an extra safety measure. After user pushback, Moonshot AI released v2.1.1 the next day, September 24, reverting filesystem watchers back to on by default while keeping the other fixes.

Your move: Filesystem watchers are back on by default after user pushback

Why it matters

Nothing to do: the update applies automatically, and the one change users objected to, watchers off by default, is already reversed. If you'd rather keep watchers off, you can still set that yourself.

Kimi Code Desktop's CLI gets two quick follow-up patches

Moonshot AI shipped two small patches to the Kimi Code CLI that powers Kimi Code Desktop, released days after Kimi Code Desktop's own launch. Version 2.0.1 (September 18, 2026) renamed the `kimi install-app` command to `kimi install-desktop`, sped up restoring sessions with large edit histories, and fixed a bug where a firing cron task could cancel an active terminal session. Version 2.0.2 (September 19, 2026) fixed message ordering in resumed sessions, a failure when switching to a model with a smaller context window, and a bug where the agent wrongly assumed its working directory was the project's root folder.

Your move: Routine bug fixes, no new features

Kimi Code Desktop launches for Mac and Windows

Moonshot AI's Kimi Code Desktop client for macOS and Windows became publicly available on September 17, 2026. The release shipped alongside Kimi Code CLI version 2.0.0, which added a new `/desktop` command (also `/install-desktop`, plus a matching `kimi install-app` command) that opens the desktop app's install page straight from the terminal. The desktop app edits local files, runs Git and a terminal, and shows a built-in browser so you can check its work, alongside the existing CLI and IDE plugin versions of Kimi Code.

Your move: The desktop app now has its own install path, built into the CLI

Why it matters

If you've only used Kimi Code as a CLI or an IDE plugin, this is the point where the standalone desktop app got an official, one-command install path from inside the tool itself. Worth a look if you'd rather run and review agent work in a dedicated window than a terminal.
