Town nears a $1 billion valuation after a rival's complaint reshuffles its investors

Your move: A rare public rift among AI assistant investors

Town is raising $90 million in a new round that would value the company at $1 billion, according to Upstarts Media. Index Ventures had signed a term sheet to lead the round, but pulled out after Instinct, a rival personal AI assistant startup that Index also backs, complained about the conflict of interest. Conviction, a VC firm with stakes in both companies, also withdrew its planned participation. Forerunner Ventures and Menlo Ventures are stepping in to co-lead instead, joined by earlier investors Andreessen Horowitz and First Round. This follows Town's $55 million Series A round in June 2026.

Why it matters

This is investor drama, not a product change, so there's nothing to do with Town today. It does show how competitive the personal AI assistant space has gotten: Instinct, the same rival that forced Index out of this deal, raised its own $250 million round about a week earlier at a $2.5 billion valuation, also backed by Index.
