Cognition closes a $2 billion round at a $48 billion valuation

Cognition, the company behind Devin and Devin Desktop, announced on September 8, 2026 that it closed a Series E round, raising over $2 billion at a $48 billion valuation. Andreessen Horowitz and Accel led the round, joined by Founders Fund, General Catalyst, Avenir, Nvidia, and dozens of other investors. Cognition's annualized revenue has grown to almost $900 million, up from about $492 million in May 2026, when the company was valued at $26 billion. Six days earlier, Bloomberg had reported Cognition was close to raising around $1 billion at a $47 billion valuation. The deal that actually closed ended up roughly twice as large as that early report.

Why it matters

This is a funding story, not a product change, so there's nothing to do in Devin Desktop today. It shows investors still see room for more than one winner in AI coding tools, and it gives Cognition more money to keep building out Devin Desktop, Devin Cloud, Devin CLI, and Devin Review.

Devin Desktop Sep 3, 2026New model

Devin adds OpenAI's new GPT-6 Astra model

On September 3, 2026, Cognition added OpenAI's newly announced GPT-6 Astra model to Devin, the same window OpenAI began rolling it out in preview. On Cognition's FrontierCode 1.1 benchmark, Astra scores within 0.4 points of Claude Fable 5 while costing 64% less to run, and it set a new high score on Cognition's own internal testing benchmark: more complete test coverage, clearer reports, and better video evidence of its work.

Why it matters

If cost matters more to you than squeezing out the last bit of quality, Astra gives Devin users a cheaper model that's nearly as capable as the current best. Worth trying on a real task to see how it compares for you.

Cognition nears a $47 billion valuation as Devin's revenue nears $1 billion

Cognition, the company behind Devin and Devin Desktop, is close to raising around $1 billion in new funding at a valuation near $47 billion, according to Bloomberg. That's up sharply from the $26 billion valuation it had just three months earlier, in May 2026. Investor demand was reportedly very strong, with close to $10 billion in interest for the round. Cognition's annualized revenue has also grown fast, passing $900 million, up from about $492 million in May.

Why it matters

This is a funding story, not a product change, so there's nothing to do in Devin Desktop today. It's worth knowing as a sign of how much money and confidence is flowing into Cognition, which could shape how fast new Devin features ship.

Devin Desktop Sep 2, 2026Cleanup scans

Devin adds a cleanup scan type and can run scans on a schedule

On September 2, 2026, Cognition added a cleanup scan type to Devin that finds dead code and cleanup opportunities in your repositories, startable directly from the composer with a new `/scan` command. Automations now support scheduling these scans to run on a recurring basis or automatically re-scan new commits, and the scan findings tab was redesigned for easier triage. The session sidebar also gained new grouping (by pull request status or by repository) and filtering by Devin mode.

Why it matters

If you already use Devin Desktop, scheduled cleanup scans are a low-effort way to keep dead code out of a repository without someone remembering to ask for it. Not urgent to act on if you're not already a Devin user.

Devin Desktop Jun 2, 2026Windsurf rebrand

Windsurf is now Devin Desktop

Cognition shipped Windsurf as Devin Desktop on June 2, 2026, as a standard over-the-air update. Plans, pricing, settings, extensions, keybindings, and MCP connections all carried over automatically, no action needed. The default launch surface changed from a code-first editor to an Agent Command Center, a Kanban board of every local and cloud agent you're running, sorted by status. Devin Desktop also added support for the open Agent Client Protocol, so Codex, Claude Agent, Gemini CLI, and other agents can run inside the editor alongside Devin. Cascade, the local agent that powered Windsurf, is being replaced by Devin Local, a Rust rewrite Cognition says is more token-efficient and supports parallel subagents. Cascade stays available only until July 1, 2026.

Why it matters

If you were a Windsurf user, you're already running Devin Desktop and don't need to do anything for your editor itself. But if any of your CI pipelines, scripts, or automations explicitly call Cascade, repoint them to Devin Local before the July 1, 2026 cutoff.

Cascade is end-of-life on July 1, 2026
