Instinct raises $250M Series B at a $2.5B valuation

Instinct raised $250 million in a new funding round led by Index Ventures and Benchmark. That brings its total funding to $350 million and values the company at $2.5 billion, about five times higher than just a few weeks ago. It's still invite-only.

Why it matters

This shows how fast Instinct is growing, but it doesn't change how the product actually works today. The privacy story in the other Instinct entry on this log is the one you should actually act on. This is just funding news.

Instinct kept reading your Gmail hours after you disconnected it

In late August, testers found that Instinct kept reading and storing Gmail messages even three hours after they had disconnected it, and it saved the messages as plain, unprotected text. Its terms of service also let Instinct keep a permanent license to use your data. A researcher even showed that fake instructions hidden inside an email could trick Instinct into doing things it shouldn't. Instinct added a manual "delete my data" button after this came out, and said it takes the concerns seriously.

Why it matters

If you've connected Instinct to your email or other accounts, this is worth acting on: check what it can see, use the new delete option to remove stored data, and read its terms of service before giving it more access.
